Hello, Today I am going to write and do practically stitching work. Its adding elastic to the pant. Adding elastic to pants is a useful skill, especially if you need to adjust the waist size or if the original elastic has worn out. Here’s the basic guide for you, you can follow through the process:

Materials Needed:

  1. Elastic (measured to your desired length, usually 3-4 inches shorter than your waist measurement for a accurate fit)
  2. Safety pin
  3. Needle and thread
  4. Scissors
  5. Seam ripper (optional, for removing existing elastic)

Steps:

  1. Measure and Cut Elastic:
    • Measure your waist where you want the pants to sit comfortably.
    • Cut the elastic about 3-4 inches shorter than your waist measurement. It should be snug but not too tight.
  2. Prepare the Pants:
    • Turn the pants inside out.
  3. Insert the Elastic:
    • Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic.
    • Thread the safety pin through the waistband casing of the pants. Move it through until it comes out the other end.
  4. Secure Elastic:
    • Once the elastic is all the way through, overlap the ends of the elastic by about 1 inch.
    • Sew the overlapped ends together securely. You can either hand-sew them or use a sewing machine with a zigzag stitch. Here I use my hand and needle.
  5. Adjust and Close:
    • Pull the elastic so that the overlapped part is inside the waistband.
    • Distribute the gathers evenly around the waistband.
    • Secure the elastic in place by sewing the openings closed at each end of the waistband. Make sure the stitches are strong enough to hold the elastic securely.
  6. Finishing Touches:
    • Trim any excess elastic or threads.
    • Turn the pants right side out and check the fit. Adjust the gathers if needed.
    • For added durability, you can sew a few additional lines of stitching along the waistband to keep the elastic in place and prevent twisting. But I don’t do this.

Once you’ve completed these steps, your pants should have a new, snug elastic waistband. Make sure to test the fit and adjust as needed before finishing off your alterations.

I have made an video for doing practically.

happy stitching.
