Cut a Straight Line on Cloth
As I am passionate about tailoring, cutting fabric and paper is part of my daily work. All of my projects require accurate and straight lines. Because when you cut the wrong way or crooked, it will destroy your desired design. Sometimes, it can spoil your fabric or make it smaller or oversized for the specific person. So, you should be careful when cutting your straight line.
Here are some tips to keep a straight line on your cloth:
- Tip 1: You can use newspaper for cutting an accurate straight line into the cloth. Tip 2: You can use a long ruler to draw a line on the fabric and cut with sharp scissors according to the line.
- Tip 3: You can cut a straight line on your fabric using a rotary cutter.
- Tip 4: If your clothes are more synthetic, then you have to use an iron for folding your cloth, then cut the cloth according to measurements.

- At first, you collect all your materials altogether. When you are going to cut, you need scissors, white paper, a pencil, an eraser, a cutter, an inch tape, a ruler, and a flat surface or table. Keep all your tools aside and place your specific paper on the table or floor. Beginning to mark our paper, you should check for any curve on your table or surface because it will disturb or ruin your project.
- Or If you have a table for cutting your cloth, it will be very helpful for you. If you don’t care about the surface, your line won’t be straight anymore. So, always find a place where you can keep your whole fabric and cut according to the desired size.
- Use a pencil to mark the start and end of your line. When you use scissors, you have to be extra cautious because your little baby can get easily hurt by sharp things. Use a pencil to mark the start and end of your line. I placed the ruler on the paper. Then, line up with the help of the ruler, and then I can draw a straight line on my paper.
- When you cut your cloth you should wide your scissor or you cant cut your cloth.

- When you use a long ruler, it will work not only for scale but also for paperweight. It’s easier to use a long ruler with a centimeter or inch mark. You can mark all your points and lines altogether and finally cut them within a short period of time.
- Tip 3 details: cutting a straight line on the fabric using a rotary cutter is a way to keep your cloth line straight but this material is not mandatory for cutting cloth.
- Tip 4 details:: If your clothes are more synthetic like nylon, silk, georgette or nylon silk, it’s more tough to keep the line straight or curved as you wish, because those fabrics are more sensitive.so you can take help from iron, first iron your cloth and fold it, the mark with a chalk or pencil and cur according to the mark.
